Ceramics & Glass (MA)

About

Ceramics & Glass students spend two years working in an intense relationship with raw materials and transformative processes. The events of mid-March 2020 presented what felt like insurmountable new challenges, as students needed to abandon unfired work on their benches, kilns were left unemptied and furnaces to cool down. Inevitable frustrations soon turned to resilience as our class of 2020 established new ways to express themselves, through extraordinary initiative and in an unfamiliar online world.

Our graduates look forward to welcoming you to a physical show when circumstances allow, but for now, they present their practices in new and unexpected ways. Current themes explore the transformation of states, phenomena of substance and the materiality of colour - references to geology and landscape sit alongside narratives that document contemporary world events, imagine undersea utopias, or re-situate ceramic masses in the gravity-free digital world. 2020 is also significant for our programme in piloting a one-term residency in China and for a third of our graduates hailing from this region of the world, celebrating a rich cultural exchange of ideas.

We invite you to view our students’ work, produced through resilience and resourcefulness in the face of extraordinary circumstances - Ceramics & Glass class of 2020.
